  • Note: Set of 10 etchings plus a hand colored colored etching used as the frontpiece. Numbered justification sheet.The complete set of 10 etchings was executed in 1943 at Atelier 17 in New York, at which time only 5 proofs were printed. This portfolio of ten etchings is from the only published edition, edited in 1980. Each plate is signed and numbered from an edition of 70 published by Editions Sabatier, Paris, 1980. An original etching, serving as the title page, was etched by the artist in 1980 specifically for this suite. Although this frontispiece is always unsigned, it is hand colored by the artist.The New School series are the first etchings ever created by Matta. They were printed in the studio of Stanley William Hayter at the New School for the social research in New York in 1943. Hayter's studio, Atelier 17, was a principle working place for many of the leading avante-garde Europeans who came to New York to escape the wartime occupation of Paris.
