  • Note: This work is yet another example of Picasso's innovation and ability to work with simple materials to create powerful imagery. Created in February 16, 1966 for writer Hélène Parmeline’s novel, Notre Dame de Vie, the image appears to resemble Parmeline’s husband, Edouard Pignon. He had grown to be very fond of the couple, becoming close friends and confidants from the early ‘50s and onwards. To craft the distinctive image, he gouged out a series of cuts in the shape of a face with various distinctive expressive features on the surface of the block. Then to more nearly replicate the natural colors of a face, he decided to use a grayish or white ink on the block, leaving the gouged out areas unprinted. In order to get the black effect where the negative areas were gouged out, the printer first hand painted an area in black roughly the size of the block, so that when white ink was printed on the paper it printed only the uncut areas of the block leaving the black underlayer to outline the features exactly as originally cut into the block. An examination of other prints from this edition reveals that no two are exactly alike as the hand painted area is never the same nor is the wiping of the surface of the block which leaves a variety of black textured spotted areas in the positive printed space.
