The Large Shepherdess (La Grande Bergere)

etching in black ink on thin chine paper with large margins, 1862, with the usual signature in the plate lower left, ,

  • State: The only state.
  • Condition: In very good condition, the impression strong and rich, the full sheet apparently, with delicate hinging at the top and mild toning in the ample margins well away from the image.
  • Plate: 12 5/8 x 9 3/8 in. (32.1 x 23.8 cm)
  • References: Recorded and illustrated in the standard catalog of the authentic original engravings of Millet, by Delteil, No. 18.
  • Framing: Sold unframed
  • Note: Jean-Francois Millet (1814-75) was a French painter and one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. Millet is noted for his scenes of peasant farmers; he can be categorised, along with his near contemporary, Gustave Courbet, as a principal exponent of the Realism art movement.

This well regarded work was originally intended for publication by the Society for Watercolors, but terms were not acceptable to Millet and thus the work was printed in smaller edition.

    Rarely seen on chine paper.
