"AL CONDE PALATINO (TO THE COUNT PALATINE OR COUNT OF THE PALATE)", c. 1855 Plate 33 from "Los Caprichos (The Caprices)" etching and aquatint,, 1799 (printed c. 1855), ,
from the small second edition, possibly first edition ,
- Condition:In very good condition, some minor toning. Large if not full margins, pencil annotation just under the plate line lower right "Goya". "SL" printed lower left corner.
- Plate: 7 1/8 by 4 7/8 inches (18 x 12.5 cm)
- References:
Recorded and illustrated in the standard text on Goya's original etchings by Harris, 63
- Framing: Sold unframed
- Note: Los Caprichos was one of four sets of prints illustrating the horrors of war then raging in Europe and the follies of 18th century Spain with its religious, social and political upheavals. The Los Caprichos series used ridicule, extravagance and fantasy to display the errors and vices of contemporary Spain. The second edition was made in the Calcografia Nacional, and was made for the Real Academia, Madrid. The edition appears to have been very small and exact number is not clear. As the Second edition this edition is well printed and the plates still show relatively little wear. Unlike the First Edition the plates are not bevelled.
