- Note: This self portrait was done after the artist suffered a stroke and could no longer use his right hand as he had done throughout his career. Instead he drew the self-portrait with his left hand.

Born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, Reid studied at various art schools including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts school, the Art Student's League in New York, and the Academie Julian in Paris, with Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. He was one of the founding members of the Ten American Painters and his art is in many permanent collections including, but not limited to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Art Museum of Detroit, Michigan, and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C.
